Stall Mats vs Stall Mattresses
While definitions vary, the main differences lie in their construction, comfort level, cost, and long-term maintenance needs. Stall mats are individual, interlocking rubber pads, while stall mattresses are multi-layered systems that provide wall-to-wall coverage.
Stall Mats
Stall mats are thick, individual rubber measuring 3/4″ thick, and fit together in a puzzle-like pattern to cover the stall floor.
- Affordable upfront cost: Mats are generally less expensive to purchase initially than a full mattress system.
- Durable: Made from dense rubber, stall mats are tough and can withstand the daily wear and tear from a horse.
- Improved traction: Mats provide a firm, non-slip surface for horses, which is safer than concrete or dirt floors.
- Easy to replace: If a single mat is damaged, it can be replaced individually without removing the entire floor.
Stall Mattresses
A stall mattress is a seamless flooring system consisting of multiple layers. It includes a thick, cushioned under-layer, filled with rubber crumbs or foam, and a single, waterproof rubber top cover that is stretched tightly and fastened to the stall walls.
- Superior comfort: The thick, resilient surface provides excellent cushioning that mimics a natural pasture, reducing pressure on a horse’s legs and joints. This is particularly beneficial for older horses or those with injuries.
- Saves on bedding: Because the mattress provides ample cushion, you can use significantly less bedding. This can lead to long-term cost savings on bedding purchases and disposal.
- Cleaner and healthier environment: The seamless, waterproof top cover prevents urine from reaching the sub-surface. This significantly reduces harmful ammonia levels and improves air quality in the barn.
- Reduced maintenance: With less bedding to muck out, stall cleaning is faster and requires less labor.
